5 More Tips To Support Your Book Signing Event

You’ve written your book, your marketing plan is in place, and it’s time to go to your first book signing! Follow our ongoing marketing series where we’ll share tips to make your book signing event the best it can be.

1) Create a “talk to me” sign

You can’t sit at your table and wait for people to come to you—you have to put yourself out there. We recommend including a small sign on your table inviting people to chat to you about a topic relating to your book. For example, if your book is a fantasy, you could try, “Talk To Me About Unicorns!”

2) Make a sign-up sheet

Having a sign-up sheet is an excellent way to grow your mailing list. We recommend asking people to sign in at the event. If they give you their e-mail address, inquire as to whether or not you can add them to your mailing list. To further encourage interested parties, you can offer to enter them into a raffle if they sign-up, but make sure that folks don’t have to be present to win (that can be a big deterrent).

3) Bring a bowl of treats

Having a bowl of chocolates or candies is a delicious way to attract people to your table. If they wander over for a snack, you have an opening to tell them about your book!

4) Schedule  your event close to pay day

Having your book signing after the first or second Friday of the month is a great way to boost sales, as people will have a bit of extra cash in their wallet to spend. Coordinating around other days such as Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, as appropriate, can be very effective as well.

5) Bring display stands

Bring a laminated stand for your book cover and a book stand. These will help make your book display look much more professional than just having the books sitting on the table. If it is within your or your publisher’s budget, a roll-up banner is an effective way to attract attention, as well!
