5 Tips to Convey Your Brand Online
Can you identify your author brand? What makes you stand out from the thousands of other writers in your genre? What does your website say about you?
If you cannot answer these questions, your book sales may be suffering.
Your personal brand communicates how you want to be perceived by your readers, usually on an emotional level. As an author, your personal brand may be described by your readers as “edgy and cool” or “deep and poetic” or “light and fun” – it’s up to you to decide. Eventually, over time, your personal brand may become synonymous with your name because you have developed a reputation for delivering on your brand promise.
For an independent or new author, one of the best ways to convey your brand is through your website. Your website should be the main “hub” where your fans come to learn about you and your books. While on your site, visitors should be experiencing your brand though every element – text, images, links, calls to action, etc.
To aid in branding your website, our book marketing experts have 5 tips to convey your brand online:
1) A Wordmark – Every author should have a wordmark. Why? For the same reason that every professional company has one. A wordmark will boost your visibility and will help improve awareness and recognition.
2) Colour – Colour is closely associated with your wordmark. When designing your wordmark, choose colours that convey a feeling – how do you want your readers to feel about you? After the wordmark is designed, the colours used should become your brand colours. Use these appropriately throughout your site to extend your personal brand.
3) A Tagline – Creating a short, simple, and memorable tagline and integrating it within your wordmark or logo or at the top of your homepage will help to communicate your brand to visitors and new readers.
4) Writing Style – When writing copy for your website (i.e. a blog), use the same style as in your books. This continuity will create a seamless transition between your books and your website. If your fans love your writing style in your books, then they are likely to frequently visit your website for more.
5) Font – Your website font(s) say a lot about your personal brand. It is important to ensure that your font is readable, but make sure you do your research and choose a font that will communicate your personal brand. For example, if you write horror stories, Comic Sans would be a poor choice.
