How Snapchat Can Be an Effective Part of Your Marketing Plan

If you’re in tune with the latest and greatest in the world of social media, surely you know about Snapchat. However, if you’re unaware, Snapchat is an app that allows users to send their followers temporary pictures and videos. The popular smartphone app boasts over 100 million users who spend an average of 25 to 30 minutes a day sending and receiving “snaps.”

In addition to its now famous filters (we’re sure you know about the dog filter), Snapchat allows users to create stories. A story is a collection of snaps that are available to be viewed for 24 hours by clicking on the user’s name. Many authors have been asking our book marketing experts if they should be on Snapchat, as they realize the importance of one-to-one (and algorithm free) communication and that Snapchat may very well be the future of social media.

The answer to this question is this: It depends.

Snapchat is not for every author. In fact, we would argue that only those who write within the following genres should consider using it:

  • Middle Grade
  • Teen/Young Adult
  • New Adult

Why are we only recommending these genres? Well, here are some important facts from Business Insider:

  • The majority of Snapchat users are female and between the ages of 13 and 25.
  • Two-fifths of 18-year-olds in the U.S. use it several times a day to check in with friends and some family members.

Thus, we recommend that authors within these genres should try Snapchat, as it can be a very powerful marketing tool. Of course, as Snapchat is part of your overall social media presence (and, thus, your brand), you’ll want to keep your content related to your writing. We recommend trying these ideas:

  • Update your followers on how you’re progressing on your next book
  • Provide your followers with a “Snapchat Exclusive” sneak peak of chapter titles
  • Tease your new book title or cover
  • Post a video of yourself signing books for contest winners
  • Have a family member post snaps of your appearances

Finally, most authors may not be comfortable sending snaps directly to followers as there may be privacy concerns, especially if you’re writing for a middle grade or teen audience. Therefore, we recommend only posting your snaps to your story and allowing your followers to view them there.
