Q&A With Author M Pepper Langlinais

Want to know what other writers think? Check out our I Am A Writer series where we ask writers to share tips, experiences, and thoughts about what matters to them.

When do you start planning an upcoming release’s marketing?

When I start writing! I’m already thinking about how to market a book even as I write it. But I don’t let that influence the actual writing (or I try not to); I still write the story I want to write, no matter whether it’s “marketable.”

In your opinion, what is the best way to react to a negative review?

I don’t read my reviews. Good ones only make me feel good for a moment, and bad ones hurt forever, so I don’t read them.

As a self-published author, what is the most difficult aspect to marketing your book?

Getting seen and heard. So much of social media is everyone shouting and no one listening. And book bloggers are swamped with requests for reviews. It’s very difficult to shine amidst such a crowded field.

Do you plan your social media posts in advance or do you post as you see fit?

Mostly as I see fit. But if there’s a day or time that’s special for some reason, I’ll schedule a post.

With giveaways a popular form of marketing for authors, do you find them successful? Why or why not?

I tried a Rafflecopter giveaway but it fell flat. However, my Goodreads giveaway went really well. So I think it’s all about the channels you use. But I’ve had the best results just giving the book away free for a weekend on Amazon, which I guess is a “giveaway” of another kind.
